Activity 1 – Paint Pretend
1. Have students separate a page into 4 parts.
2. Using black paint only, have them pretend to be one of the following emotions and express that using only lines:
a. Happy
b. Sad
c. Excited
d. Angry
3. When finished, repeat this activity using appropriate colours.
Activity 2 – Emotional Trees
Using the previous activity and the colour wheel brainstorms (from Topic 1) draw a tree that mirrors each of the following:
a. Happy
b. Sad
c. Excited
d. Angry
Activity 3 – Self Portraits
Let students choose one of the above emotions and draw a self portrait to reflect that emotion, focusing on the use of line and colour as symbol and emotion. (Note: make it very clear to your students that portraits do not need to be perfect or life-like, they can be abstract. Encourage them to experiment with their creativity.)
Have students reflect on colour and line in art and write a paragraph describing, analysing and justifying their portrait.
