Talking About Art
Activity 1 – Introduction to Critiquing
1. Explain to the students that as art does not always make sense to us as an audience we analyse, interpret and judge other peoples’ work to form our own understanding.
2. Introduce the DIAJ method of critiquing by going through each segment of the template (below) thoroughly and discussing the guiding questions.
3. As a class, do a DIAJ critique of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” by answering the questions on the sheet.
Activity 2 – Practise Critiquing
Let each student choose a favourite artwork and critique it using the template. (Note: this is a good time to gauge understanding and help those students who are struggling with the concept.)
Activity 3 – Artist Statements
1. Explain to students that an artist statement is the artist’s way of explaining the work to the audience without needing to be there. The following website clearly explains the purpose of an artist statement and the basic content : http://www.artstudy.org/art-and-design-careers/artist-statement.php
2. Explicitly outline the components of an artist statement (based on the guide document below). It’s a good idea to let the students come up with the focus questions as they are more likely to understand the importance.
3. Have students write an artist statement, using the guide document, of their self portrait from Topic 3.
