Educational Focus
The ‘Racial Conflict’ Arts Education Package has been designed to meet the education needs of Grade 7 students. The chosen activities were developed to introduce students to the representation and symbolism that can be created with line and colour. They also provide opportunity to appraise and work with a variety of media and techniques.
While they are all focused on racial conflict, the artworks chosen for the exhibition vary in the techniques, forms and styles employed by the artists. This allows the students to study a wider range of representations and appraise differing works. Correct terminology accompanies all the activities in the package so that students can define the elements and principles of art and effectively employ these when interpreting and appraising.
Students will explore a variety of practical techniques as well as developing skills in presenting, responding and reflecting on their own and others work. After completing the activities, each student will then develop and create an artwork about racial conflict and present this in a classroom exhibition. An artist statement will accompany their work to demonstrate their knowledge of appraisal and interpretation as well as the elements and principles of art.
